Cash, Fame, and Glory at Stake in IHS's first Male Pageant

The Class of 2010 will be sponsoring IHS's first beauty pageant, Mr. IHS, tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the IHS cafeteria. The event will be a fundraiser for the IHS Class of '10, so audience members will pay a price of around $5 per ticket.

Sorry ladies, this pageant is only for the men. Males of any graduating class can apply. Besides being a male IHS student, the only other requirement for eligibility is that contestants want to be the center of attention no matter what. Judges will consist of several teachers, but the audience will also be able to vote. There will be several stages to determine who will earn the glorious title of Mr. IHS and the additional prizes at stake. Class of '10 President Ebolutalese A. '10 said that "The prize is undecided because there might be a legal issue, but for now we have a cash prize planned, with a sash [and] crown."

Like any typical pageant, there will be a clothing and modeling section. According to Airewele, contestants will show off in eveningwear and a toga. Because beauty isn't just observed from the outside, the men will also have to answer questions and showcase an interesting and convincing talent. After all the men have been on display there will be an intermission where other talents by people not competing will be presented.

Many students anticipate an element of hilarity in the pageant, many have already started laughing from seeing film character Derek Zoolander's (Ben Stiller's character in the 2001 comedy Zoolander) face posted around the school with his four famous facial poses.

However, not all students find the idea of the pageant risible. The individual reactions to this event range from excitement to wonder.

Ruth G. '11 said, "I think it's great. Very innovative, creative, hilarious, and I hope it becomes an annual event!"

Jiyoung W. '10 seemed a little surprised. "I would think that not very many guys would want to participate in that kind of event."

Lia H. '09 stated that she thought "that it seems pretty ridiculous and almost a waste of time!" This event seems a bit odd to many upperclassmen, who have spent several years at IHS without it. However, for underclassman such as Daniel C. '12, Mr. IHS "seems like a nice way for students to have fun in friendly competition."
