Forest T. Participates in USAMO

Forest T. '12 has become the first IHS student in over 15 years to earn the honor of participating in the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), the third round of the national math competition after the open American Math Competition and the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. The USAMO took place at IHS on April 28 and 29, lasting nine hours total for six essay questions. About 500 students in the country took the examination. "I'm pretty excited about taking it, but I'm not too hopeful because the problems are very hard and its tiring to just sit and stare at a piece of paper for hours," said Forest T.

Somber News During Medieval History Class Trip

On Friday April 3, a gunman named Jiverly A. Wong entered the American Civic Association's immigration service center in Binghamton and killed 14 people, himself included. Within a mile of the shooting were IHS Social Studies Teacher Mary Terese Pasquale-Bowen and her medieval history class. They were on a fieldtrip visiting the many Orthodox churches in Binghamton, to further their understanding of Vladimir of Kiev. "We were getting lunch at a place that was usually packed, with lines going around the corner," said Pasquale-Bowen, a Binghamton native. The restaurant was nearly empty, and soon they were informed of the tragedy that was just occurring. Though they weren't in any danger, she said "The mood was incredibly somber."

IHS Principal Search Drawing to Conclusion

On April 29 five applicants for the position of IHS principal went through a series of interviews in the district, including one held by a g. of seven IHS students. According to a timeline drafted in late April, two or three finalists would have been selected by May 1, with a second round of interviews on May 5 held by the superintendent, executive team, and members of the Board of Education. The district human resources committee hoped to appoint a candidate by the week of May 13 so that the position would be determined by the end of May. The future principal will replace IHS Principal Joe Wilson on July 1.
