In my opinion, one of the best things to do in winter is take walks in the snow. Bundled up against the chill, there is a beauty and stillness to the surroundings that you can’t find any other time of year. It’s easy to feel as though you are falling asleep under the dim glow of the streetlights, with everything frozen and peaceful. Here are a few of my favorite songs for that perfect kind of quiet:
“I’d Like to Walk Around in Your Mind” by Vashti Bunyan—Dreamy and warm, as cozy as a pair of wool socks.
“Paul” by Big Thief—Early morning drive, no particular destination.
“Clay Pigeons” by Michael Cera—Blue and pensive, with whimsical, lonely lyrics. Best when walking down the middle of an empty street.
“Death With Dignity” by Sufjan Stevens—Melancholy, staring-out-the-window kind of winter chill.
“Coffee” by beabadoobee—That perfect snowglobe moment.
“My Little Corner of the World” by Yo La Tengo—Walking in downtown Ithaca, window shopping and drinking coffee.
“First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes—A sunrise on a cold morning. Need I say more?
“Always Forever” by Cults—Holding hands under the streetlights, watching the snow fall.
“j’s lullaby (darlin’ i’d wait for you)” by Delaney Bailey—For late nights, as your breath condenses in the cold.
“Love in the Time of Socialism” by Yellow House—Hot cocoa and heavy snow.
