Taylor Swift, an eleven time Grammy award winner, released her new album, Midnights on October 21, 2022. Swift’s true fans have been waiting for this day to come for many months. The songs revealed are a mix of her past indie albums like Folklore and Evermore, as well as her pop albums 1989 and Lover. Swift has always been a very divisive female artist, ever since she was about sixteen; some love her and some hate her. Personally, I’ve been a fan since I was seven. Something about her music is just so soothing to hear. You certainly cannot please everyone though, that’s unfortunately just the way the world works.
If you hear her without autotune, you would undoubtedly be impressed; her voice is organic and real. It’s common nowadays to use plenty of autotune, and most artists use it to adjust their pitch and make it sound a particular way, taking away from the uniqueness. Swift uses it to give her music dimension and character, not to change anything about herself. Her voice is confident and doesn’t even remotely need autotune. Somehow natural talent is something people condemn, a common occurrence for female artists. Most musicians write about their life—which naturally will include romance—but she is the one to get criticized for it. Could it perhaps have to do with her being a woman? The hate people extend towards Taylor Swift, a very successful female artist, is out of pure sexist standards that need to be abolished.
Many people think her songs are all about boys and breakups. Yes, she’s had her fair share of guys in her life, but that shouldn’t define her. A person’s relationships don’t determine their worth as a human. Why do we judge her for telling her story? Her stories and experiences give her character and make her different from other artists. The very fact that she chooses to involve her fans in her life and write about something so relatable is compelling. Breakups are emotional and the feelings she shows in her songs are surreal. The lyrics allow her to connect with her fans on a deep level, crediting her talent and capability as a songwriter.
She began her career extremely young and willingly chose to be someone that everyone could look up to. That’s a brave choice to make considering the harsh judgment and criticism she receives, and we should all respect her for that. So much hate derives from people in our world, it’s a toxic atmosphere. Being in the music industry isn’t easy at all, given that there is so much pressure from the world to look or act a certain way. Swift’s success was doubted various times by other artists, such as Damon Albarn, who publicly questioned her about whether she writes her own songs or not. But that didn’t stop her—she persisted. Swift is extremely talented and has advanced her career in so many ways throughout the years despite others’ judgment. She is such a powerful female role model for young people, and has no doubt proved herself in numerous ways. Everyone could learn a little from her sweet and sincere personality.
