Brie Larson, the actress who plays Captain Marvel, was recently interviewed by Variety about the future of her character, leaving many true fans disappointed with her lackluster responses. Lately there has been a lot of controversy about Larson playing the part of Captain Marvel. This controversy may have contributed to her feeling uncertain of whether her fans were fond of her acting, or if she would want to play the character of Captain Marvel again, even stating, “Does anyone want me to do it again?” Recently, many people have been debating Larson’s ability to act. To me this is disappointing; young kids and even adults lookup to this character and find her to be inspiring in more than one way. Personally, I thought that the character she portrayed did a phenomenal job of exceeding society’s standards. Women in general aren’t usually the ones to be shown as “powerful.” Even in today’s world, many people believe that women are not nearly as capable as men in displaying strength. However, Marvel Studios has subverted this misconception and really nailed the portrayal of women empowerment, despite society’s expectations of female superheroes. Let’s not forget all the amazing CGI in the movie as well; the graphics effectively added to the movie’s overall interpretation and feeling. Most importantly, action fans got a superhero movie with a female lead. This is very important because, in many action and superhero movies, women are simply viewed as the love interests rather than the hero, which is unfair. Women aren’t just possible girlfriends of superheroes in movies, but rather people with the potential to be heroes themselves.
If you haven’t seen the film Captain Marvel, it’s a newer Marvel movie that came out in 2019 directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. This fan favorite features Carol Danvers, the female protagonist, as she comes to terms with her powers and the many difficult events she experienced in her past. Carol Danvers’ backstory isn’t about a love interest. Instead, it’s about her, which is what makes this movie so powerful. She’s not someone who can be fooled anymore.
Of course, Captain Marvel is an action movie, but there’s a lot more to the story than just that. The protagonist discovers who she is as a person, empowering other women to do the same. Marvel decides to shine the light on a female superhero instead of a man for once, but somehow the actress is receiving very harsh criticism for her outstanding job. If the haters could keep their opinions to themselves our world would be a much more positive and optimistic environment, and more women could feel empowered by this excellent superhero film.
