The student representatives to the Board of Education (BoE) are a group of four students elected each year by the IHS student body to represent its interests at board meetings and relay pertinent information back to the school. Recently, they’ve discussed the J-Hallway entrances with Acting Principal Martha Hardesty. The exit signs were green and the entrance signs were red, which seemed counterintuitive. This has now been solved, however the doors for exit and entrance are on the wrong side of the hallway. Unfortunately, this won’t be changed anytime soon, because the keycard sensor needs to be moved to the other side of the wall.
As was mentioned in this column last month, the student representatives are still advocating for the removal of the four-point grading scale from middle school courses bearing high school credit (Earth Science, Algebra, and Foreign Languages). However, at the January 26 Curriculum Solutions Committee, Ithaca Teachers Association president Kathryn Cernera suggested that the four-point scale be expanded to IHS. The student representatives strongly oppose this change and look forward to community conversations on this topic over the next several months.
Lastly, the long-awaited recycling video is finally in production. The student representatives are working in collaboration with Jonathan Shyne’s media production students to film an informative and promotional video for the paper-only recycling campaign. The video will almost certainly be completed by the time of this issue’s publication.
If the reader would like to meet with the student representatives during lunch or after school to discuss any policy concern, or to share thoughts about any ongoing project, they should feel free to reach out via email at the addresses provided below.
