Are you stressed with exams? Have the seasonal blues? Drowning in all of the demands of high school? We have the perfect solution for you: a good ol’ cup of boba! No matter the problem you are facing, a sip of this fun, delicious drink is sure to make your dilemmas feel a little less awful, and make your day a little brighter! Here are our ratings and opinions on a few of the flavors of this amazing drink.
Classic Milk Tea
Connie: 8/10. I think the classic milk tea flavour is really solid. I do have some personal preferences for sugar to tea flavor ratios, especially for this one. I personally prefer a lower sugary taste and a stronger taste of the tea which is easier to find abroad than here. Although I do try to order reduced sugar, it still just isn’t quite the same with the tea flavor, which is the only thing holding my rating back.
Mia: 6/10. I usually like boba flavors that have a little more flavor
in them, so I don’t get this one a lot. However, this is definitely a great flavor to have if you don’t know what to drink or are new to boba. It’s not that sweet, yet still tasty and not overly overpowering.
Brown Sugar Milk Tea
Connie: 7/10. It’s a great caffeine free option for anyone who can’t handle the caffeine levels of regular milk tea. I mean, it’s sweet milk with brown sugar boba pearls, a pretty inoffensive combination (unless you’re allergic to dairy or lactose intolerant). It’s just not my favorite drink because I personally don’t really enjoy the taste of milk but if you’re a dairy lover or don’t mind it, this is a great go-to.
Mia: 7/10. If you don’t like super sweet drinks, then be sure to ask for less sugar as this drink is normally pretty sweet. Nonetheless, this is another great option if you’re pondering at the menu trying to find a drink! It has this sort of nostalgic taste that’s almost a bit like caramel, but infused with milk.
Taro Milk Tea
Connie: 5.5/10. This may be an unpopular opinion but I don’t really enjoy regular taro flavoured milk that much. I don’t hate it and will still drink it, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to order it. I don’t have a good reason for this—maybe it tends to be too sweet—but whatever the real reason, it’s not my favorite. But it’s definitely not a bad option.
Mia: 8/10. This is one of those flavors that you either really enjoy or don’t like at all. Personally, it’s one of my favorites, especially on a cold, dreary day. It has a warm, unique taste that’s great if you feel like trying a new, adventurous flavor for this drink. Also, I find that its flavors are enhanced when it’s ordered as a warm drink, versus a cold one.
Matcha Milk Tea
Connie: 9/10. This is usually my go-to order at any place I’ve never been to. As you might guess, I prefer a strong matcha flavor without being overpowered by too much sugar. I like the strong, earthy, and slightly bitter taste of matcha, so covering it up with a lot of sugar feels like a waste to me. However, I know that many people can’t stand its earthy flavor, so maybe that’s just me.
Mia: 7/10. If you’re particular about your boba, this flavor might be tricky to match to your exact taste. In my experience, it’s often hit or miss, but it can be a “safe” option if you enjoy matcha and aren’t sure what to order. However, if you’re looking for a true matcha flavor, you’re probably better off getting an authentic matcha beverage somewhere else, or choosing a different boba flavor.
Thai Milk Tea
Connie: 7.5/10. This flavor is fine. I like it, but it’s not my favorite. I don’t have much else to say about it. Sometimes, it’s a bit too sweet, but overall, it’s not bad.
Mia: 7/10. This is another drink with a distinct flavor. I haven’t had it in a while, but I know many people who enjoy it regularly. It’s a great option if you’re looking for something fun and different to try!
Oreo Milk Tea
Connie: 6/10. For me, this flavor has the same issues as Taro Milk Tea where it tends to be too sweet for me even with reduced sugar. It’s like a reskin except I have tried a combo of oreo flavoured milk tea with mashed taro in it at UTEA and thought it was interesting so I’m rating it a bit higher for this novelty.
Mia: (N/A)/10. I haven’t tried this flavor before, so I trust Connie’s review on this one. Still, it seems like an interesting flavor to try!
Fruit Tea
Connie: 10/10. Call me boring but I honestly enjoy fruit tea more than milk tea sometimes. It’s green or black tea (maybe technically oolong) with fruit flavouring. I personally like black tea bases more and one of my go-to orders at UTEA is the peach oolong so if you aren’t sensitive to caffeine, give fruit tea a try!
Mia: 9/10. My go-to order! Some of my favorites are the Winter Melon tea at Kung Fu Tea, and the Grapefruit Tea at U Tea (both locations are in College Town). There’s something so fun and rewarding about the taste of your favorite fruits in tea form, with chewy boba to accompany them. Just keep in mind that these tend to have a good amount of caffeine with them since their base is green or black tea, so if you’re caffeine sensitive, you might want to consider another alternative.
Hopefully our reviews on different boba flavors have given you ideas on what your next order should be. Take this as a sign to treat yourself, and relieve your worries with a cup of boba!
