Do you know what a refugee is?
A person who has been forced to leave their country
To escape war, persecution, or natural disaster
A person without a home because home isn’t safe any more
Currently, most refugees come from the Middle East
Being showered by bombs daily
Living in fear of an oppressive government we could never understand
Who have lost everything by the same terrorists we fear
There are parents who send their children into the night
With a prayer to some God on a rickety boat in the Mediterranean
Leading to safe haven in a powerful nation
Helping the needy daily, while Europe is overrun by refugees
The U.S. barely helps relieve the global crisis
Because this powerful nation wants to build walls
We slam the door on the downtrodden traveller
While the Statue of Liberty cries in the corner
Only because they could be that terrorist too
That is almost never true
Refugees are the first victims of terrorism and therefore the furthest thing from a terrorist
What’s unfortunate is all the hatred thrown at the refugees who live in this country
Maybe it isn’t safe for refugees here
Even so, this is a country of immigrants and refugees
It is our time to participate in the world
And make a home for all people
