I think it’s safe to say that a lot of us have more free time at home now than we’ve had in a while. With significantly less homework compared to the regular school year, it’s a great time to relax and catch up on these iconic movies, some of which are considered classics and some of which likely will be in a few decades!
Classics:
Alien (R) – This exciting sci-fi horror movie with a strong female protagonist is perfectly paced and infinitely suspenseful. The acting, script, and directing are all on point, and the special effects are incredible! It holds up remarkably well and appeals to just about every type of film fan.
Back to the Future (PG) – A fun and adventurous romp through the space-time continuum, this quintessential ‘80s movie is perfect for those looking for something lighthearted. It has the perfect blend of fantasy, humor, and relatability, and is considered a classic film for good reason.
Jaws (PG) – Probably the most famous shark movie of all time, and definitely one of the best! This classic Steven Spielberg thriller holds up even today. It’s a must-watch for any horror or action fans. This film’s twists and turns set the bar very high for every shark movie that came after it.
Mean Girls (PG-13) – It has come to my attention that some people haven’t seen this absolute classic. How can I even begin to describe this, perhaps as the most iconic teen movie of all time? This hilarious Tina Fey-written comedy has an abundance of quotable lines and is a ton of fun all around.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (PG) – I can only describe this movie as outrageously funny. It is a ridiculous retelling of the legend of King Arthur, and anyone with the slightest interest in comedy or even historical fiction should definitely check out this delightful cult classic.
Future Classics:
Parasite (R) – This Best Picture 2019 winner is a must-watch! Not only is it darkly hilarious and absolutely riveting, but it also calls attention to the extremely current issue of class inequality in modern industrial society. This film is definitely deserving of its four Oscar wins!
Black Panther (PG-13) – This is definitely one of the best Marvel movies out there! Black Panther features an amazing cast who brought the already exciting plot to life. The costume design, script, cinematography, production and soundtrack of this film are all top-notch.
Get Out (R) – This Jordan Peele masterpiece explores and condemns racism in America, all while entertaining and captivating the viewer. It’s an incredible debut, a flawlessly executed horror-comedy, and definitely some serious food for thought.
Us (R) – Another work from the great Jordan Peele, this social thriller explores the themes of solidarity, dissociation, class conflict and more, all the while holding the viewer in nail-biting suspense. There was not a single moment in this movie where I was not completely engrossed.
