The sight of a blank page can either be inspiring or terrifying. Whether you’re stuck with a bad case of writer’s block or just looking for the chance to use your imagination, writing prompts can be one of the greatest ways to get the creative juices flowing. When it comes to writing, the best (and only) way to get better is to do it! Here are ten writing prompts to inspire you this June:
- Create an alternate beginning.
- Find three random objects and weave them into a story or poem.
- Create a surreal dream atmosphere, but write it in a way that seems to make perfect logical sense.
- Write an elaborate ode addressed to someone or something that is very dear to you…or that you detest.
- Think back to your earliest memory and incorporate anything you can remember into a story or poem.
- Write a poem that elaborates on the significance of one particular detail.
- In limerick form, create a series of misadventures that pester someone throughout their day (slipping on a banana peel, tripping down the stairs, etc).
- Create a found poem using only the words on page 67 or 23 of the oldest book that you can find.
- Jot down something illegible and come back to it weeks or months later. Write a story or poem about whatever you think it may have said. (Or, alternatively, go through your old notes and find something unintelligible to try and decipher).
- In fifty words or less, create a short story with a twist ending that changes its entire meaning.
