Persona poetry tells a story through the voice of a character
other than the author. For this month, the poem is told from the
perspective of a worm in a rainstorm.
Worms surface when it’s raining for various reasons, including
lack of oxygen underground, ease of migration in mud, and fear
that the sound of raindrops on
the ground is the sound of a predator. Persona poetry can be
inspired by anything and anyone, from people to plants, animals to
inanimate objects.
Rain beats down on the roof like a drum
Already I can feel our house begin to fall apart
The waves crash in from every direction,
destroying everything, my room along with it
“Time to go,” we chant,
as we slide towards the surface
And although we cannot see
we know when we have reached the Upper World
The world is our playground
slip n’ slides and roller coasters
But soon it’s clear we are not safe
We’re not meant to be here long
Children’s shoes and robins’ beaks
come swooping in from the heavens
A life short-lived, a muddy mess
Tricked by falling water
