This month marks the anniversary of when the Wheels Vs. Doors debate went viral across social media platforms. It’s a simple question, really, for how mind-boggling it can be: are there more wheels or doors in the world? We ride on wheels and walk through doors every day, but how do the quantities compare? Without mathematically calculating it, we explored different approaches to try to intuitively reason our way through which object there would be a greater quantity of… Here is the thought process—although we’ve reached no verdict… yet.
Wheels: Involves movement and comes in a wide range of sizes!
1. Vehicles With Wheels Don’t Always Have a Door
Bicycles, tricycles, unicycles, and motorcycles are four examples of vehicles that will have at least one wheel, but no door. Additionally, wagons, wheelbarrows, wheelchairs, chairs with wheels (which does include wheelchairs), and strollers likewise will have wheels, but no door. There are a plethora of vehicles that, unless you count thin air as a door, will give wheels a sound victory.
2. The Question of Gears
Gears are considered to be a type of wheel, meaning that anything using gears—from your grandfather clocks to your grandfather’s car—will have wheels (or additional wheels) in them. Gears provide a multitude of non-vehicles that will use gears, including some toys, drills, and lifts.
Doors: Any barrier allowing access to an enclosed space, large or tiny!
1. Most Things With Wheels Will Have a Door (Also, Windows)
Most vehicles—cars, buses, trucks, planes, trains, and more—have wheels, that is true. But they also have doors, meaning that most vehicles also contribute to the total doors in the world. Not only that, but cars often have the same number of doors as wheels (four and four), while commercial planes are typically equipped with six wheels and six doors, including emergency exits.
2. The Question of Windows
A door can be defined as something used to enter or exit a given location. By that definition, windows are doors, meaning a house’s structure has even more doors than its typical utter lack of wheels. The usual two to four windows on a car likewise ensure that it will have more doors than the typical wheels. Besides, using that definition, fridges, cabinet doors, and lifts also have doors.
