Did you know that IHS has its very own fashion club? This club gets together every Tuesday after school to sketch and design clothes together. In April, they’ll be hosting their debut event, a fashion show! The show will take place in Lower York on April 25. As they prepared for this exciting event, I stopped by to ask them a few questions about their club, the process, and what to expect for their show.
Zadie Wang: What brought you guys to the Fashion Club?
Ella Schneider: I wanted to do fashion club last year but I had a lot of stuff that was going on and I was also a little nervous to join, but coming in as a sophomore I felt better about it. Plus I love fashion and I want to take a job in fashion. I think this was my best opportunity.
Rennie Smolenski: I like selling clothes and making stuff. I thought Fashion Club would be a good place to do that.
LeAnn Zhu: Honestly, I was looking more into fashion over the past summer. I also really like art and design so that just brought me here.
Carly’iana Frank: I’m the president of the club. I joined the club last year before it got canceled. I just wanted to bring in a very fun group of people in fashion and making clothes, which is what I did.
ZW: What have you been working on so far?
CF: We [haven’t gotten] to start a bunch yet, we’ve been working on designing clothes, sketching it out first.
ES: Collaborating with the community closet and looking at clothes and how to run a fashion show.
ZW: How would you describe each of your unique styles?
ES: I don’t know, I kind of just look at clothes I like and I look at
inspiration on Instagram, Pinterest, from both models, Vogue, and celebrities, and I kind of just put it together how I like it.
LZ: I’m really into [a] part-elegant, part-fun [style]. I like fluffy stuff and I like sparkly clothes. You’ll find me wearing sparkles a lot!
CF: My fashion spirals all over the place. Every day it’s a different aesthetic. It’s just really random most of the time!
RS: I like mixing vintage 50’s silhouettes with modern things and trying to incorporate vintage and futuristic styles together.
Madame Blalock: Fashion is a form of identity for me. I am Eastern European and the way I dress is part of my identity. And I hate them Crocs.
ZW: What do you guys hope to accomplish with the Fashion club and the fashion show?
RS: I think it’s really important to use fashion as a form of self-expression and to help to get to know other people. I think…having fashion shows and doing Fashion Club will allow more people to explore that side of themselves.
ES: Our statement we sent out was, “we want to help everyone in the high school find their inner style no matter what it is.” [Their style is] just whatever clothes they feel comfortable in.
ZW: Madame Blalock, Why did you become the club advisor?
MB: My president and my vice president wanted to form a club, and they did not have an advisor so Ms. Dobmeier sent out an email asking for an advisor. When I heard about fashion I thought, “this is exactly my thing, I have to do this.” So this is how it all started! I’m loving it, and I’m loving my club members.
Make sure to join the fashion club for their fashion show on April 25.
