we came up from the stream,
and dried our legs in the wind off the mountain
until we fell asleep in the midday
sunning on the rocks like fish
but then
a white tree fell in the woods
we thought it was a feather,
a snake that swam out of the sky
but its bark peeled off so nicely
and we made ourselves some new skin
but then
a butterfly kiss,
two dogs dragged by an eager kid
we realized we were all alone
running down the mountain,
we were far from home.
