IHS’ Girls’ Varsity soccer team is set to build on last year’s success. After a strong 2023 season that saw them reach the sectional finals, the team is ready and motivated to take the next step.
Captains Phoebe Colvin, Izzy Makosh, and Hannah Atonyak guide the team with strong leadership and aim to work together, because, as Colvin emphasized, “Everyone has a role.” This attitude was a major factor in last year’s success when the team exceeded expectations. “We’ve been playing together for a long time and we know each other really well,” said Eliza Derito when asked about camaraderie. Coach Roberts emphasized the importance of accountability in their attacking style of soccer, stating, “We’re focused on playing as a unit – we win together; we lose together.”
In just five games the team has secured three wins and two ties, but the team has faced some challenges with finishing. This just means there is room to improve. In their tie against Vestal, they had more than ten shots on frame, but the ball never found the back of the net. With some fine-tuning, the team is confident they can improve their shotmaking.
This should be a strong year for the Little Red with nearly the entire starting lineup returning. This includes second-year goalie Lucy Levine, who has earned the defense’s trust with her calm demeanor and improved play. Speaking of defense, the team hasn’t let in a goal yet this year.
With a talented roster and strong chemistry, the team is poised for another standout season. “I expect us to be one of the more powerful teams in the section,” said Derito, reflecting the team’s shared belief in their potential. Both coaches and players are excited for what lies ahead, no matter the outcome. Only time will tell if the locker room buzz translates to on-field success. How the group gels and plays between the lines will determine how far they go.
