Clinking glasses in a festive setting. Yaymaker
After twelve long months, we are finally in the last stretch of 2024, gearing up for a month full of festivities and celebrations. As the holiday spirit makes its way through town, you’re likely to encounter the many different types of people this season brings. Here are some of our opinions on the types of people you might encounter during this time of year.
The One Racing Against the Clock
Connie: Whoops, this is me! Time slips by so fast, and shipping—especially internationally—takes longer than you’d think! Try to cut these people some slack, because usually, the reason they end up racing against the clock is that they were bogged down with work beforehand. However, even if you see these people in a frenzy over last-minute prep, everything usually still turns out fine.
Mia: Despite vowing not to push all of their holiday tasks to the last minute (like they have in prior years), once again, the story repeats itself. If you run into this person, do not tell them, “Maybe you should’ve thought ahead,” because they already know that. Instead, try to sympathize and help them out if they need it—eventually, things will fall into place, and everyone will be alright in the end.
The ChatterBox
Connie: This is also me… what can I say? The holidays are the best time to catch up with people, especially if you haven’t seen them in a bit. Honestly, as long as they can yap, it’s fine if it’s not an incredibly nuanced back-and-forth discussion. If you get sick of it, just let them know—or smoothly slide them over to another yapper. Either works.
Mia: Whether you’re at a reunion, a holiday event, or just out in public, you’re likely to find that one person who’s just waiting to share every waking thought on their mind. Something about this time of year just supercharges some people’s social battery to an all-time high. If you run into this person, you can keep up the conversation or send them to The Holiday Spirit—they’ll likely become good friends.
The Holiday Spirit
Connie: I admire how spirited and dedicated these people are to going all out for the season. From coordinating outfits to decking out their entire house, their commitment to being as festive as possible is really impressive. These people are honestly great to be around because their festive vibes rub off on everyone and make everyone feel great.
Mia: Through their festive outfits, off-key caroling, and pure holiday joy, these people might be loved or avoided depending on your situation. But honestly, there’s nothing wrong with an overabundance of holiday spirit! Pair them with The Chatterbox, and hopefully, they’ll keep each other entertained.
The Non-celebrator
Connie: Honestly, it depends on the reason. I think it’s perfectly valid if someone doesn’t celebrate anything for religious reasons. However, not celebrating when you’re already invited to something, just because you’re “too mature” or somehow “above” celebrating with others, feels silly to me. You’re never “too old” or “above” the holidays. Pretending otherwise feels like a waste. Go out! Have fun! Enjoy the break, and spend it with people whose company you find bearable. It’s a break for a reason—stop trying to keep up façades and let loose!
Mia: It definitely depends on the reason for this, but as long as you don’t take away from everyone else’s celebrations, there’s nothing wrong with being or finding this type of person.
The Grinch
Connie: Somehow, there are people worse than the “I’m too mature” non-celebrators, and that’s these people. Maybe you don’t want to celebrate, and that’s fine—no one’s forcing you to. But going out of your way to ruin others’ celebrations is a bit much. Unless these people have somehow incredibly wronged you, there are better celebrations to crash…
Mia: I don’t get how, through all the smiles and joy this season brings, someone could choose to bring negative energy and ruin the celebration. Regardless of bad memories or a general dislike for the holidays, don’t spread that same energy to others who genuinely want to enjoy this time of year.
The Tradition Believer
Connie: Ahh the tradition believer, these people are especially fun around the new year. Colorful undergarments, eating twelve grapes, carrying an empty suitcase, you name it, they’ve done it. Whether it works or not is a different story, but honestly, I think it’s almost admirable how committed some of these people are to their prospects at a better year, and the traditions are harmless fun anyway, so why not enjoy yourselves on New Year’s just a little more.
Mia: Holiday traditions are a great way to encourage holiday spirit! Whether they are more conventional ones, or ones unique to your festivities, these are always a staple to the holidays.
The One Still Working/Busy
Connie: My heart goes out to you if you’re stuck working or busy during the holidays. You have a level of dedication I couldn’t even imagine having. Good luck, and stay on that grind.
Mia: I really appreciate those who remain committed to their jobs during the holidays. I know it can’t be easy to work while many are off celebrating. It’s because of your hard work that we’re able to enjoy this time of year, and for that, we thank you.
We hope this helps prepare you for the different personalities this season brings. No matter who you encounter, we hope you find joy and holiday energy. Regardless of which holidays you celebrate, this is a time for reflection, joy, and fun! Have a wonderful holiday season, and cheers to the New Year!
