Billie sang of Strange Fruit, I decry a StrangER Fruit
I see it in the halls of IHS, boundless energy left untapped
No real success, fake numbers finessed to make it appear shiny and fresh
Male and Female no nevermind, they all do the trick…taking up time
Get up close, look and see, rotted flesh, no scrutiny
Places with boundaries, containment fees in Auburn, Elmira and Poughkeepsie
Youngest men now turned out, Gorgeous women live with self doubt
Can’t read or write, they are Black and white
Listen now hear them shout
Too many make way to heaven’s gate, too early Tamir and Trayvon’s fate
Who do we blame? Who earned this shame?
Did we teach the Golden Rule? Did we give them useful tools?
To read a book on level 3, No Real elevation of their needs
Complete a sentence, useful thoughts, self images without doubt
This fruit has brought me to my knees, I want to be hopeful, I want them to seed
Positive birth of useful talents, to make America a Great Alliance
But the StrangER Fruit ripens and stinks, it swells with the gasses of modern teen angst
The fruit is a nasty, distasteful mess, from elementary school they have regressed
This StrangER Fruit is left alone, stepped on, sensationalized in commercialized zones
It is the fruit that others eat, incarcerated, satiated with defeat
This StrangER Fruit rots downtown, lifeless addiction, aimlessness abounds
We see it here. We feel despair. We fail to guide it with genuine care.
Maybe there will always be a StrangER Fruit, a range within our human group
where this StrangER Fruit just falls, and fails within these educational walls
Lies are told about the fruit, geniuses, athletic phenoms, I see mediocrity
No coalition of the masses, where they could learn in real world classes
Where teachers know what truly works and students put their educations first
The Strange fruit Billie sang of, still hangs on trees and also lines the halls of the ICSD
The strangest fruit that we see has no direction, no school boundaries,
People pick this strangest fruit for self absorbent needs, denying what the future holds, for them it’s chaos and uncertainty
Reading, writing and arithmetic, so simple still a need, the necessary advantage of those not falling or hanging from trees
