Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are constantly reshaping our industries, and the world of media and entertainment is no exception. AI-generated film scripts,
digital artwork, and mock conversations are just a few examples of how artificial intelligence is transforming the arts, sparking widespread debates about its role in the industry. While AI may offer the tools to streamline production and deliver personalized experiences within seconds, it also raises concerns about the authenticity and originality of artwork, as well as its harsh environmental impact.
In this article, we discuss the following question: Should artificial intelligence play a significant role in media and entertainment?
Support
1. Creativity and Time Efficiency
AI is a powerful tool that can help creators to push past the previous boundaries of storytelling and production. Not only can artists, filmmakers, and writers can save time by using AI for automating repetitive and time-intensive tasks like editing and color grading, they can receive assistance to accelerate the creative process. AI-powered programs such as OpenAI’s GPT models can be utilized to compile scripts, generate plot ideas, and create dialogues to accelerate the process. Rather than replacing human creativity, which many fear, AI can act as a collaborator, helping creators realize ideas that were once too complex to achieve.
2. Accessibility and Personalized Experience
AI plays a great role when it comes to personalized entertainment. Algorithms on frequently-used apps can be tailored to match each user’s preference, and stories can be generated for AI roleplay or games, where narratives adapt to individual choices in real time. Providing a unique storyline for every user can deepen engagement and immersion, overall increasing the quality of entertainment across the board. AI can also make media accessible through features like real-time translation, dubbing, and automated subtitles that break barriers and expand the reach of entertainment to a worldwide audience.
Opposition
1. AI Usage has Severe Impacts on the Environment
The collective use of AI consumes an abundance of natural resources. As a computer heats up when used for a long period of time, AI technology must be cooled from its extensive use. One study estimated that infrastructure involving the use of AI may use six times the amount of water as Denmark in the same time. This is especially concerning considering that only around six million people inhabit Denmark whereas two billion people in the world do not have access to clean water. Additionally, the stature of these AI structures are composed of many metals that are often not properly recycled and disposed of. This results in pollution, adding to the world’s growing climate crisis. While the development of AI in media and entertainment may be appealing, it has negative implications on pre-existing insufficiencies in natural resources and the environment.
2. Authenticity and Originality
In general, AI-generated content lacks new and unique perspectives, as it is trained from a limited database. It is nearly impossible to match the emotional depth that comes from human creativity; while AI can analyze patterns and mimic existing styles, it struggles to produce original works. Relying heavily on AI may eventually lead to a homogenization of media, failing to capture our diverse feelings and perspectives. Originality should not be sacrificed for efficiency and sheer quantity, because an AI can not replicate the human touch in art that is valued by the audience.
There are several other reasons why one might support the use of AI in revolutionizing the entertainment industry, as well as reasons to oppose it.
