As the NHL playoffs near the end, it’s time to evaluate the most important part of playoff hockey: WAG jackets. For the past couple of seasons, wives and girlfriends of the players (WAGs) have ordered custom jackets to wear to playoff games. Just like the play in the postseason, the competition surrounding these girls and their jackets is fierce, but there can only be one winner.

Five Worst:
5. Tampa Bay Lightning: The back of these jackets is too busy. Including the full title of the team (Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey Club) pushed the players’ number and names too low, and set the whole jacket off kilter. The detailing and hype video were very cool, though.
4. Los Angeles Kings: These jackets are bland. Any team could put their logo on them and it wouldn’t change.
3. Dallas Stars: To me, this is more personal, but the mix of black and green is too low contrast. It’s hard to see the number on the back, and, whether or not it was intentional, it ended up looking very basic. To be fair, I couldn’t see the front in any pictures, so if there was more interesting detailing, I wouldn’t know.
2. Ottawa Senators: I have only one thought about the beige color of these jackets: yuck. They don’t even match the color of the logo; they’re much lighter. The design is nice but minimal, and the beige just desaturates the whole thing.
1. Carolina Hurricanes: These jackets genuinely look like they’re made from a table cloth. The retro look is cool, but this one is screaming “stuck in high school” too much for me. I might have had other opinions in 2021, but these jackets sank in a tough pool of competition.

Five Best:
Honorable Mention – New Jersey Devils: Perfectly Jersey.
5. Edmonton Oilers: I like the way that these are different from the classic leather jacket, but I think that Lauren Kyle went a little far with these. The suede is very nice, and the indented numbers are classy, but the back is too busy for me. Kyle’s company doesn’t have to be featured at all, and the switch of fonts between the Oilers and the player names is odd.
4. Colorado Avalanche: I like the red on these jackets, and they are super classy and simple. They would have been higher up, but there isn’t much special about them. I would have liked to see another color, but there really isn’t anything wrong.
3. Minnesota Wild: These jackets are the basic leather jacket done perfectly. The green is more interesting than a basic black, and the other logo colors are blended seamlessly. This team gets extra points for using more than one color, but I think the cursive font for the name looked odd.
2. Washington Capitals: These are jackets that are busy in the right way. The exaggerated bomber silhouette matches the vintage logos perfectly, and the backs are so fun. No matter how these jackets are styled, they steal the attention perfectly.
1. Montréal Canadiens: These jackets are balanced so perfectly. On the back, the name, number, and logo each have their own space, and contrast nicely with the dark red base. On the front, the team name is spaced well and doesn’t look too busy. The patches on the sides add a nice flair, and the cherry red ties the whole jacket together.
It’s so interesting how much attention the WAGs get during the playoffs, not just for their players, but for their fashion choices! It feels like a blend of style and sports culture, and these jackets are definitely making a statement.
