The student representatives to the Board of Education (BoE) are a group of four students elected each year by the IHS student body to represent their interests at Board meetings and relay pertinent information back to the school. On June 6, IHS will be voting to elect representatives for the next school year.
BoE elections have concluded, and preliminary results indicate victories for incumbents Karen Yearwood and Erin Croyle. Yearwood is a community leader with experience leading Village at Ithaca and Ithaca Public Education Initiative; Croyle is a disability rights advocate and journalist with three children currently enrolled in ICSD. Despite the benefit of incumbency, Dr. Jill Tripp was not reelected to a second term.
Newcomers Jacob Shiffrin and Madeline Cardona, both endorsed by the Ithaca Teachers Association in addition to Yearwood and Croyle, have also emerged victorious. Shiffrin ran on a joint platform with Scott Jahnke and David McMurray, advocating academic excellence, a common community concern in the wake of five ICSD schools losing “good standing” with New York State. Madeline Cardona ran with the goal of improving district communication with families.
In addition to BoE member elections, May 20 was also voting day for next year’s proposed ICSD budget, which passed. This budget drew considerable media attention due to its implications for teachers, whose union (ITA) is currently engaged in negotiations with administration over their next six-year contract.
