Recently, the student representatives to the Board of Education have been working on a tentative policy for the new ex officio law required by New York State. This policy works to expand student feedback and representation on school decisions. Upon implementation for the 2026-2027 academic year, four student reps will rotate who attends the regular board voting meetings as an ex officio member. Ex officio members sit in as members of the board and can give input on board discussions. The student representatives will also attend monthly committee meetings. These will help the student reps hone in on specific issues, including curriculum, finances, facilities, policy, and human resources. In regard to the voting process and term service, student reps will still serve for one academic year, and go through the regular voting process at the end of the school year (similar to class officer elections). This new policy looks to expand student opportunity for feedback, creating a more collaborative system for issues in ICSD.
Aside from the policy, the current student representatives would like to continue the expansion of collaboration from a broader population of our school. We are currently working on getting in touch with other members of the community and associations to gather feedback that we can give to the board. If there’s any feedback anyone one likes to make known to the board, but doesn’t know how, feel free to reach out to myself or any of the other representatives (Judah Kishnick ’27, Jingying Xiu ’27, and Qin Yang ’27). There is also a feedback form on the Student Representatives Instagram page (@ihsrepstoboard). We look forward to working with all of you!
