“It’s over! It’s over! Knick fans, this is not a dream! Your long, long wait has ended! Go ahead and cry! After fifty-three years, the Knicks are finally NBA champions once again!” – Mike Breen.
It has been around three months now since the New York Knicks won the 2026 National Basketball Association (NBA) championship. This win ended a fifty-three year long wait since the Knicks’ last championship in 1973. The playoff run this team had this season will go down in NBA history. In the past few years, the Knicks have struggled to make it deep in the postseason. Yet, after earning their spot in the playoffs this past season and showing their dominance all the way up to the championship, the Knicks have finally proved themselves worthy again.
This victorious season could not have happened without the amazing stars that make up this team. Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns (also known as KAT), and Jalen Brunson (often referred to as Captain Clutch), all led this team to be unstoppable. These players all played pivotal roles in the team’s success.
Specifically, Josh Hart is one of the most energetic players on the team and shows his defensive talent along with his offensive skills under pressure. Mikal Bridges presented himself as a strong player this year with many three-point shots and a fierce defensive mentality. OG Anunoby proved himself as a key player this postseason with consistent defensive and offensive performances especially in tight moments, including his game-winning tip-in during game four of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. Additionally, Towns was the Knicks’ main big-man center during this playoff series and should be known for his consistent rebounds, scoring, and spacing. Lastly, the superstar of this team, stealing the Finals Most Valuable Player Award, Brunson steered his team throughout the playoffs, including leading huge comebacks, and overall pulling his team up onto the champion platform. Brunson averaged 32.6 points in the 2026 NBA Finals, and scored forty-five points in game five to clinch the title.
Every year, one NBA team finishes the season victorious as they claim the championship title after fighting hard in the playoffs. This year, however, was different.
From the start of playoffs, the Knicks seemed like a strong team and a possible threat, but their track record meant many fans didn’t expect anything crazy. This is not to say that they didn’t have immense hope for their team—these are New Yorkers we are talking about here. But soon enough, the Knicks pulled in front of the other teams and started an unprecedented winning streak that would take them all the way to the finals.
The Knicks won the first game in the round against the Atlanta Hawks, but then lost the next two games, putting the Hawks in the lead, 2-1. Going into game six, however, the Knicks led the series 3-2, and advanced to round two after dominating and defeating the Hawks with an astonishing forty-seven-point lead by halftime. In the second round, the Knicks began to seem unstoppable. Against the Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers, the Knicks pulled off a 4-0 series win. A sweep. Knicks in four!
This impressive and surprising Knicks series win led the threatening team into the Eastern Conference Finals, or round three of the playoffs, against the Cleveland Cavaliers. With so much momentum, New York started game one strong, but the players struggled to hold it together and found themselves down twenty-two points in the fourth quarter. However, this wouldn’t be the game to end the Knicks winning streak. With Jalen Brunson’s persistence and sixteen points alone in the fourth quarter, the Knicks made a huge comeback to win the game 115-104. This win really stoked the Knicks’ flame because they quickly finished off the Cavaliers to advance to the NBA Finals with another 4-0 series win. Smoked. Knick’s in four. Again.
This was the first time the Knicks had advanced to the NBA Finals since 1999. After twenty-six years, the Knicks had another shot to become champions as they faced the San Antonio Spurs in the finals. Even with the Knicks eleven-game winning streak, many thought the finals could go either way with such a strong San Antonio team which included 7’4” center Victor Wembanyama, and very skilled point guard, Stephon Castle.
The finals started with a very close and intense first game with the Knicks barely taking the win. In game two, both teams played similarly with the Knicks trailing by ten to fifteen points in the first quarter of both games. It was close, but once again the Knicks stole the win with a final score of 105-104 to lead the series 2-0.
It was looking very good for New York at this point. However, in game three, after another very intense and close game, the Spurs were able to spare themselves by winning 115-111.
Game four of the 2026 NBA finals proved to give the New Yorkers all the hope they needed to finally become champions again. This memorable game saw a heated matchup and the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history. Late in the game, the Knicks were down twenty-nine points to San Antonio, similar to game one of the Eastern Conference Finals against Cleveland. The Knicks played with everything they had to comeback almost thirty points and capped it off with OG Anunoby’s game-winning tip-in, which made Knicks’ fans in Madison Square Garden go absolutely bonkers.
This victory led the Knicks to lead the series 3-1 as they went into game five. Game five ended with the best result New York could have ever asked for. The Knicks beat the Spurs 94-90 resulting in 4-1 victory in the best out of seven series. A 4-1 victory crowning the New York Knicks as the 2026 NBA Champions.
Fifty-three years. Fifty-three years since the Knicks last won a championship title! Fifty-three years since New Yorkers cried of relief and happiness! The wait is finally over and New York is victorious. A dream come true. For all New Yorkers, this is for you, your moment, your time to celebrate. You have been patient, you have been loyal to this family, and you have believed. And for that, you deserve it. “Once a Knick, always a Knick.”
