The Tattler Editorial Board recognizes that some of the photoshopped images of Dr. Luvelle Brown published in the April issue have been interpreted as racist stereotypes. We deeply apologize for the harm caused to the community and Dr. Brown by these images, and regret that we did not catch the problematic connections. Our intent was to create humorous images related to our district and superintendent using Snapchat filters and online photoshop tools, but we were unaware that these tools generated images with concerning similarities to historical context including blackface and minstrelsy. As a paper, our central responsibility is to create positive change in our community, and these images represented a failure in that regard. We are committed to producing a paper that is inclusive and respectful of all people, and are actively working to create policies to prevent situations like this from arising again.
Please remember that if you have any feedback for the paper on this matter or any other issues at any time, you can contact editor@ihstattler.com.
