Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Prime Video television series Good Omens.
On October 24, it was announced that Prime Video’s hit show Good Omens would conclude with a single ninety-minute episode, instead of the planned third season.
This decision was made in wake of the recent sexual assault allegations made against Neil Gaiman, the previous creator, showrunner, executive producer, and co-author of the series. Tortoise Media’s podcast Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman reported allegations against Gaiman by two women in July of 2024, and since then, three more women have come forward as well. News about Gaiman’s sexual misconduct was followed by the cancellation of Netflix’s second season of Dead Boy Detectives in August, although Netflix did not confirm the reason for the cancellation. In September, Disney also halted production of its adaptation of Gaiman’s novel The Graveyard Book. While Gaiman continues to vehemently deny the claims against him, he offered to step back from production of the conclusion to Good Omens.
The Prime Video television series is an adaptation of Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel of the same name. The show stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant as the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, who form an unlikely relationship during their time on Earth together. The two characters ultimately band together to stop the impending Armageddon and destruction of the universe. The show quickly gained a large following due to both its imaginative storyline and the on-screen chemistry between the two protagonists. The second season premiered in July of 2023, and left viewers on a heart-wrenching cliffhanger as Aziraphale and Crowley separate after Crowley reveals his romantic feelings for the angel. Good Omens was renewed for season three in December of 2023, and fans were hoping to see a happy ending to tie up the angsty conclusion in season two.
With the tumultuous conclusion to season two, there are a lot of questions unanswered. Along with the tensions in Aziraphale and Crowley’s relationship, the final episode of season two set up the possibility of the Second Coming in the near future. With Aziraphale now stationed as the head Archangel in Heaven, his loyalties between Heaven and humanity will certainly be conflicted. Crowley meanwhile will have to deal with his rejected feelings and the loss of his best friend. With such a large list of loose ends to tie up, a lot will have to be done in the final ninety-minute episode. While the previous two seasons have all been six episodes in length, the final episode will have a large challenge delivering a satisfying conclusion to this story.
As of now, there is little certainty about what the conclusion to Good Omens will feature. But it is clear that the final episode will attempt to once and for all conclude Aziraphale and Crowley’s story. Other than Sheen and Tennant, there aren’t any confirmed cast members. Since the final season will be so condensed, it is likely that there will be less screen time devoted to the side storylines that usually dominate the television series, instead focusing more on the fractured relationship between the two main characters. With filming set to start in Scotland early next year, it will be some time before the conclusion to the series will reach audiences’ screens.
