Imagine there’s nowhere to run because everything is destroyed. There’s no one to go to, because they’re all being attacked. You have nothing to protect yourself, because it’s all lost somewhere in the mess. On top of that, zombies are surrounding you, inching closer and closer. What are you going to do?
There will soon be a way to prepare for this situation, right here at IHS. The PE Department at IHS recently announced the newest addition to its required list of classes for students: The Basics of Fighting Zombies. This has been in the making for many years now and will be available starting in the 2023-2024 school year. All students will be required to take it for at least one semester and pass the course, in order to help satisfy the mandatory two PE Credits needed for graduation.
In a short interview with the PE Department earlier this week, they explained how the idea first arose during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, as the virus spread to millions worldwide. The virulence and deadliness of the pandemic made people question what other future outbreaks could be faced, especially relating to zombies. The future of a possible zombie apocalypse is still vague and uncertain, but viable. The PE department released a statement at their latest meeting, “While we understand the controversy that will come with this addition, we strongly feel this is an essential course for the safety of our students.” Even our superintendent, Dr. Luvelle Brown added his input on the new course with, “We shouldn’t react when a zombie outbreak occurs, but instead be prepared. As a district, we want to make sure our students walk out of our schools knowing how to protect themselves and not fear when such an outbreak occurs.”
The class is expected to cover the basic strategies of how and when to react when such an event happens. While an instructor has not yet been announced, IHS social media accounts speculate that it may be none other than Mr. Woken Deymon. Students should also expect to receive homework supplements about the characteristics of zombies such as their brain development, strengths, and psychology. The class is expected to mostly be held outdoors, and due to the fact zombies burn in the light, the class will only be offered between the hours of 12 a.m. and 3 a.m. Frequent field trips to caves, shaded forests, and other areas with no sunlight are also expected as these are common spots to find hidden, lurking zombies.
This is a first-of-its-kind class starting right here at IHS. While many may feel worried or uneasy about a class on fighting zombies at first, they should be excited about this new development. The class will give students a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and training not found anywhere else in the world. Something that starts as a thought could be brought to life at any moment, like in the beginning hypothetical situation, so while there’s the chance, might as well prepare in advance for the worst to come.
