Ding…!” At the melodious ringing of the IHS bell, hundreds of students rush out of classrooms into the narrow hallways, and the chatter of voices fills the air. Some students stop to chat and catch up with their friends, while others move hurriedly through the halls to make it to class within the five-minute passing period. But alas! The flood of students flows slowly and becomes stagnant at the stairs and hallway corners. Students, wielding twenty-pound backpacks and hefty textbooks fight their way through the crowds, narrowly avoiding collisions. When they finally arrive at their next class, sweaty-faced and out of breath, the class has already started and the teachers are handing out late notes without mercy.
Does this scenario sound familiar to you? Are you sick of these difficult hallways? Well, worry no more. The IHS Traffic Guards are the new traffic lights of IHS. We are a club dedicated to making your hallway experience more enjoyable and efficient by directing people safely in each direction using traffic cones and signs. Next time you are stuck in the halls, look for our members wearing neon yellow traffic jackets embroidered with our motto—“Hallway navigation made easy!”—and follow their expert instruction.
The IHS Traffic Guard’s top priority is placing members in the busiest places like G and H buildings. Eventually, we hope to have experienced and dedicated traffic guards in each hallway.
The IHS Traffic Guard meets every Friday after school. At meetings, we discuss different ways to manage hallway traffic. We will also be visiting classes to explain how to follow the directions our members give. Look out for the Official IHS Traffic Manual, coming to the shelves of your local bookstore in Summer 2025!
We’re currently searching for more members to help our cause. Auditions to join our prestigious organization will be in Kulp Auditorium during Universal Lunch on April 15-17. For the audition, students should prepare a five-minute long traffic directing routine as well as a fifty-minute speech on why YOU are qualified to join the newest generation of young traffic leaders.
Why should YOU join the IHS Traffic Guard, you ask? Great question! In addition to doing a great service to your very own IHS community, Traffic Guards also automatically become Core Value Ambassadors, a new initiative from the IHS administration that aims to strengthen and promote Core Values within the community. Core Value Ambassadors have the privilege of a bimonthly luncheon with the esteemed Acting Principal Hardesty to discuss the furthering of Core Values in the community. Traffic Guard shifts also count for community service hours for National Honor Society or Participation in Government classes. But the final, perhaps most monumental reason of all: active participation in an extracurricular organization looks great on college applications!
For the 2025-26 school year, we hope to assign five members to patrol each wing. Members will be able to sign up for shifts at their hallway. Prior to beginning service, all members are required to go through an hour-long session of traffic training. Make sure to sign up for auditions before it’s too late!
