As students, we tend to be overwhelmed with work, whether it be studying for a physics exam, completing complex projects, doing research papers, and more. As a result, we can get so busy to the point where we jeopardize our health. When it comes to health, many people don’t take it as a priority over their overwhelming schoolwork. It should be stressed, however, that people should strive to keep their health in good shape, no matter how busy they are. Let’s take a look at some ways to improve one’s health and what you maybe have been missing out on doing.
The first thing you should do is sleep at least seven to eight hours per night. No matter what, you should finish your schoolwork at a certain time and hit the hay early. If you have a bunch of work to do and you can’t get it done in one night, go to bed early and follow up the next morning. Getting enough sleep is essential for your health. It aids your memory, helping you retain what you learned the previous day. It also helps you focus, be in a good mood, and be able to function and think. Sleep in when you can, especially on weekends or days when you don’t have school, like over spring break.
The next thing you should do is avoid drinking too much caffeine. Caffeine is short-term, artificial energy. It’s okay to drink a little, but it can be harmful if it is consumed in large amounts. According to the Food and Drug Administration, too much caffeine can lead to nausea, high blood pressure, headaches, and more. Before you think about taking a third cup of coffee to stay awake, be assured that natural energy like from sleep and vegetables is better for you.
Speaking of vegetables, I also advise you to eat healthy. Snacks and treats in moderation to ensure your health is all fine, and try to follow the guidelines, such as those from MyPlate to ensure you are properly nourishing yourself. Eating right can lead you to feel more energized and give you nutrients to help your body work better, thus maximizing your efficiency.
Finally, for physical health, do not overlook exercising. It’s easy to disregard it for work that’s seemingly more important, but I think it should not be ignored. Exercise every day, no matter the circumstances. Make a workout routine and do it every day, no exceptions. Feel extremely sick? You can do them poorly. Still have a lot of work? You can do it quickly. Just make sure to do them every day to create a consistent routine. The workout routine can even be as little as you want as long as you vow to never skip them. It’s recommended starting with something manageable, like five pushups a day. It may be challenging and may not make a big difference to start, but you’ll find yourself doing over one thousand five-hundred a year—now that’s a lot. Regular exercise every day will get you to being a happier, energetic, more efficient you, helping you feel free from your work.
Now, that’s the end for physical health. But there’s another type of health that’s just as important—mental health. Mental health should not be taken lightly. Rather, it should be considered as important as physical health. Having good mental health is important in being happy and grateful for what you have in life.
The first thing that is highly advised to do is to spend family time. Work can be tiring and time-consuming, but family is extremely important. It will help you feel free and not confined from the world and the ones you love. If you can, choose family over your homework. Do anything you want with your family. Eat together, go on a walk, or even just have a quality conversation with them. One thing you should never take for granted is your family. You should make the most out of the time you have with them and be happier, thus boosting your mental health.
You can also improve your mental health by taking breaks from studying. More time studying does not always mean better grades. If you are studying for a test and know the material sufficiently, it might be a good time to just relax. You could get a good sleep, read a book, and just relax (but make sure you don’t forget) before fate comes. It may lead you to feeling more zen and being less stressed to just think about getting the test over with once you know the material just fine. With this, also avoid cramming as much as possible.
It may also be good to start keeping what people call a gratitude journal. This can really boost your mental health. Science says that if you use one of these journals and list all the good things in your life, you can start every day happier. This could really work for people who are stressed. Every morning, sit in front of the journal and think about everything you are happy about: your family, your friends, your new video games, the fact you’re having your favorite food for dinner that night. Whatever it is, write it down. You’ll live more stress-free and treat life more delicately, making the most of your life.
Finally, this last thing about mental health is very important: don’t hesitate to ask for help. If you’re down because of anything, whether if you lost a loved one, stress overtakes you, or for any other reason, don’t be afraid to talk to people. Talk to anyone you know or trust, like your parents, friends, counselors, or anybody you feel safe with, and don’t be shy to express your feelings to them.
My final point about health is to take care of yourself first. Prioritize your health first and foremost. Before you start your homework, for example, start by exercising for a little while. Before starting your chores, rest a little when you get back from school to help you feel less overwhelmed if you can. Instead of studying for a test all night, get a good sleep and follow up the next morning. These steps of putting yourself first will help your life be better and easier. Prioritizing your health will keep you more joyful and stronger each day. So in the midst of homework, carve out time to take care of yourself. Meditate, eat nourishing meals, work out, sleep well, do whatever you can do to be a more well-rounded you physically and mentally. Knowing that your condition matters, start your health journey now to have a future in a happy, healthy condition.
