Walking into a restaurant, happily ready to order, and in the corner of your eye you see a kid on their iPad while everyone is eating. Technology has become one of the biggest things in our world, and now it is very common to see children playing on their iPad. Their food starts to get cold, and only a few fries have been eaten because the children are too busy with their iPad. Their parents can look happy, or look disappointed, but it all depends on the use of the iPad. So, should kids have iPads at restaurants, or should they not?
Why kids should have iPads at restaurants
In the twenty-first century, parenting can be hard. We are surrounded by social media and popular culture that encourage focused, almost obsessive parenting strategies. Parents are expected to devote countless hours to paving the way for their children in every aspect of their lives, eliminating the bumps in the road instead of teaching their children how to deal with them. This method is known as helicopter parenting. It sets kids up for failure as soon as they get to the point in life where their parents can no longer live for them. Despite all of this, most parents are still doing their best to raise their kids and hopefully find some sort of balance. They need to be able to prioritize themselves at times.
Young children using iPads at restaurants does minimal damage to children’s development, but it gives parents the opportunity to enjoy themselves and find a balance. There are numerous educational shows and platforms on the internet. If children are given access to these, they can learn significantly more during their time spent at the restaurant than they would have by simply sitting there, bored.
Giving young kids entertainment also improves the restaurant experience for everyone else. At most restaurants there are significantly more adults than there are children, and many of these adults would be happier without the chaos and noise of unoccupied, young children. In a public setting, parents should always be doing their best to guide their children to behave in a way that will make the situation enjoyable for the majority of others.
Young kids’ noise and interruptions can also limit successful communication with the server. This leads to an unpleasant experience, possible miscommunication, and unnecessary stress during a server’s already busy shift. By providing young kids with iPads at restaurants, parents increase their happiness, the happiness of those around them, their children’s education, and their own sanity.
Why kids should not have iPads at restaurants
Although using an iPad can be somewhat beneficial, it should be stored away when at a restaurant. Restaurants, especially for young children, are such important places that children should experience and remember. In a world where technology is taking over it’s nice for kids to have less screen time, especially at a restaurant.
Parents are also taking their kids to a restaurant for a reason: to spend time with them. If a parent goes to a restaurant to spend time with their child and the child is on an iPad the whole time, that defeats the purpose. iPads can also be a distraction from eating, which is the whole point of a restaurant.
Although iPads can be beneficial for learning or other activities, it is disrespectful for children to have their iPads out when there are people sitting directly in front of them. It lets precious time go by with their parents, and their parents are not going to be there forever. As they grow up, they’ll start using their phones at the restaurants, continuing the same habit. Overall, iPads should be stored away when eating because mealtime is one of the few moments reserved for family time, and family time is precious time.
