Sports teams at IHS are known for their competitiveness. The environment can feel restrictive and stressful, from tryouts to cuts to the hypercompetitive nature of games and tournaments. Unified sports, however, provide a welcome alternative—the teams are inclusive outlets for students with and without disabilities and are a great place to make new friends. To get a closer look at the joy that Unified sports bring to the IHS community, I spoke to Unified Bowling coach Mr. Asklar and six team members.
Mr. Asklar, who has coached the team for six seasons, reflected that the “compassion that people on the team have for one another” makes the team so special. According to Mr. Asklar, team members “look out for […] and encourage each other,” with Special Education students paired up with “partner” students during games. Moses Howard ’26 agreed, highlighting the importance of the team’s camaraderie.
Oscar Giblin ’25, who has been on the team since his freshman year, emphasized that although he likes to bowl, he mainly continues to play because he “love[s] the community” that the team has created. This sentiment is shared by Isaiah Smith ’25, who was inspired by Giblin to join the team and quickly found a sense of belonging. In this supportive environment, team members can create and build upon friendships that last even after the season is over.
Participating in Unified bowling has been a fun way to make friends, but more importantly, it’s a learning experience for all involved. Team managers Lia Imus ’26 and Debby Huang ’26 attested that the experience helped them develop a deeper understanding of teamwork. Huang added that through the program, she learned that “patience and consistency” are key to creating an uplifting space.
This year, the Ithaca team will host games at their new home bowling alley, Court-Lanes. As the Section 4 Unified Sports defending champions, they are set to play six games this season, leading up to a culminating championship.
When asked about an upcoming game against Union-Endicott, John Mallins ’25 exclaimed, “I hope we win!” “I hope so, too,” Mr. Asklar replied, embracing Mallins.
