IHS’s drama program, like all drama programs within ICSD, is an exceptional showcase of student talent and diversity. This year, IHS’s program is competing with the best of the best in the inaugural Greater Binghamton High School Musical Theatre Awards.
IHS’s show title for this year is 9 to 5 by Patricia Resnick, with an original score and lyrics by the iconic Dolly Parton herself. A musical adaptation of the eponymous 1980s screwball comedy, 9 to 5 follows three women in the 1970s workforce as they work to overthrow their sexist boss and create a more equal work environment. The story was a success at the time of its release, and its messages of gender equality still resonate today.
The production of 9 to 5 will be evaluated alongside ten other secondary schools within fifty geographic miles of Binghamton University in stiff competition for a variety of individual and production awards. IHS’s musical will be compared with productions of notable golden age musicals like Bye Bye Birdie (to be performed by Whitney Point High School) and family favorites like The Addams Family (to be performed by Tully Junior Senior High School), among other hits. Adjudicators will attend each school’s performances to evaluate each performance and give both positive and constructive criticism. Then, the adjudication team will determine nominations and winners for each award.
The awards will culminate in a two-day workshop on Binghamton University’s campus in May. Each school will nominate up to four students from each production to attend the workshop. Selected students will work with industry professionals, receive masterclasses in singing and choreography, and perform at the award ceremony on the last day of the workshop. During the ceremony, adjudicators will give awards for excellence in performance by lead and supporting performers, ensembles, choreography, and technical design.
IHS’s production of 9 to 5 will run from April 17 to 19, 2026, in Kulp Auditorium. Tickets will be available for purchase via CheddarUp closer to the show’s limited run.
