After his win this past April, Rory McIlroy joins a select few golfers that have won consecutive Masters. Creeping up on its centennial anniversary, the tournament has a storied past filled with unique traditions. Despite being the venue for one of the most boring sports to spectate, the Augusta National in Georgia regularly brings huge crowds of spectators for the tournament.
With two green jackets, McIlroy will now have options when selecting his outfit for next year’s Champions’ Dinner. The event is hosted by the previous winner (so this will be McIlroy’s second in a row), and has a dress code: Green Jackets only. Just as the name suggests, this annual dinner is only for previous winners of the tournament. The reigning champion selects the menu and the dinner kicks off Masters week with a bang.
While you can go onto the Masters website and watch videos of nearly any length detailing the tournament, visitors cannot take any videos of their own. In fact, the entire event is phone-free. Spectators are focused entirely on the gameplay, especially in a year like this; McIlroy only beat Scottie Scheffler by a single stroke.
But guests lacking their phones will still be ensured a good time, as hospitality is a huge part of the Masters. Instead of being called “fans” or “spectators,” the Masters requires all coverage of the event to refer to the viewers as “patrons.” These patrons are also guaranteed a cheap visit (once they obtain a ticket through the competitive lottery). There’s no tipping at Augusta National, and the food is mind-bogglingly cheap. The famous pimento cheese sandwich is only a dollar and a half, and many other items are priced that low or only minimally higher.
Rory McIlroy is joining the history of the Masters alongside all of these traditions, as he is one of only four golfers to win back-to-back Masters. He has been playing the Masters for eighteen years, but his first win in 2025 broke an eleven-year tournament drought. Whether it’s the cheap sandwiches or the golf, Augusta National is the place to be in April!
