Recently, there has been a lack of fun new novels. I don’t mean well-written novels or ones with social commentary. I mean a novel that’s witty, charming, and overall a good read. Dungeon Crawler Carl is this type of read.
Dungeon Crawler Carl centers around Carl, an ex-Marine who, along with Donut, his ex-girlfriend’s cat, is thrust into an apocalyptic game show run by aliens who want to watch people die for good ratings. Sounds absurd? It is. And yet, the way it’s written leans into this absurdity and doesn’t come off as trying too hard. Talking goat-men? You got it. Drug-dealing llamas? Check. This book mishmashes elements from Dungeons and Dragons with some of the weirdest ideas ever, but it works! This novel is a definite recommendation for sci-fi fans, but anyone with a sense of humor, time to kill, and an open mind will love this.
